iCE pRACTICES

Practice starts at the scheduled time. Skaters should be ready, with skates on, waiting by the rinkside when practice begins. Arrive at the ice rink well in advance.

For younger or beginner skaters, parents may initially assist with tying skates, but skaters are encouraged to practice tying their own skates at home and at the rink.

Moving between locations: For example, transitioning from ice practice at the UK Areena to off-ice training at 1-Halli is primarily the skater’s responsibility, though parents may assist if needed.

Pick-up location: Parents should pick up their child from the designated training location where the session ends. Always arrive on time to collect your child.

Viewing practice: Parents may watch from the rink café or stands. For safety and focus, avoid staying at the rinkside or in the player benches during practice. Outdoor shoes are not permitted in the player benches to prevent dirt and sand from damaging the ice.

Photography: Do not photograph practices without the coach’s permission.

off-ice training

Required equipment for off-ice training:

  • Plastic jump rope (length: folded, it should reach from under the feet to the shoulders).
  • Water bottle (also for ice practice).
  • Spin trainer (available at skating stores).
  • Exercise mat.
  • Resistance band.

Off-ice training focuses on developing motor skills and figure skating-specific abilities through drills and games. Training is usually held at 1-HALLI (Main Ice Hall). If a game overlaps with the session, off-ice training may be moved outdoors (weather permitting) or to 2-HALLI.

Clothing: Wear flexible, lightweight attire and sneakers suitable for running and jumping.

Skater Grouping

Children in the Skating School are divided into skill-based groups: Beginner Group or Advanced Group. Our coaches will assign each child to the most suitable group based on their skill level at the start of the ice sessions. Both groups practice at the same time on the same rink, but on different sections of the ice.

Beginner Group
Designed for children with no prior skating experience, this group focuses on building fundamental skating skills. Goals include learning to skate independently both forward and backward as well as learning to fall and get up without assistance. Coaches and assistants will help children during sessions and parents are also welcome on the ice to support their child. Skating aids are available for use during lessons.

Advanced Group
This group is for children who have already mastered the basic skills taught in the Beginner Group and no longer require support to stay upright. Training focuses on developing more advanced skills such as glides, steps, spins and simple pirouettes (e.g., scratch spin). The Advanced Group is ideal for children with at least one season of skating school experience.

Age Group

The Skating School is intended for children aged 3–7 years.

Helmet Recreational Group

The Helmet group focuses on learning figure skating elements in a recreational setting without competitive goals. This group accommodates a wider age range than competitive groups with skaters aged approximately 7–15 years. Skating remains enjoyable and team-spirited while skaters continue to learn new skills and develop their abilities.

The Helmet group trains twice a week on the ice and participates in one off-ice session per week.

Head Coach: Vilma Kosonen

Helmet Group Guidelines and Information

Equipment

Since the Helmet group focuses on learning figure skating elements, skaters are required to use proper figure skates. These skates provide the necessary ankle support for jumps, spins and steps. Skaters can choose from various brands (e.g., Risport, Edea, Riedell), as different skate profiles suit different feet.

  • We recommend purchasing skates from a specialized figure skating store, but well-maintained second-hand skates are a viable option for beginners.
  • Skating aids for beginners such as suitable blades are crucial. While market skates are a good starting point, upgrading to proper figure skates as soon as possible is highly recommended.
  • The club has a WhatsApp marketplace for trading good-condition second-hand skates. Ask the coach for access to the group.

For detailed information on figure skates, blades and proper lacing, refer to the Skating School Equipment Info.

Helmets are recommended for skaters until their balance has sufficiently developed. After this a lightweight protective band can be used, although it doesn’t offer the same protection as a helmet. For questions about helmet usage, consult your coach.

Clothing should be lightweight yet warm and flexible. Avoid bulky items like snow pants or jeans. Recommended attire includes skating tights, gloves, a thermal shirt, a fleece jacket and a headband for warmth. Hair should be tied back during practice.
